Kahani
has also been a landmark in Vidya
Balan's career, who is now giving top heroines like Kareena , Katrina and
Priyanka a serious run for their money. Here are the unique elements in the
film that worked wonders at the box office and for Vidya as well.
A pregnant woman as the protagonist:At a time
when all Bollywood heroines are hiring stylists and make-up artists from
Hollywood, a totally non-glamorous and heavily pregnant Vidya Bagchi strode
onto the screen wearing a non-descript flowing dress. That itself got the
audience hooked onto the screen.
A film without a hero:When most film heroes are still
showing off their six-packs.Sujoy Ghosh decided to break all conventions and
not have a hero in the script at all! Vidya Balan carried the whole film on her
shoulders along with the character actors- something that is still a rare
phenomenon in Bollywood.
Unusual villains:When most filmmakers spend crores to get the 'look' of the villain
right, the villains in this film were just 'normal' people. In fact, Saswata
Chatterjee, who played a contract killer in the film, looked anything but a
villain with his round.
The sudden twists:The rapidly changing circumstances and situations made the film
really fast. An innocent pregnant woman's journey to find her husband suddenly
turned into a hot spy-chase. The most sudden twist was, of course, reserved
till the very end where Vidya turns into a spy herself.
An amazing supporting cast:The supporting cast of the film is
seasoned theatre actors from Bengal like Parambrata Chatterjee (Satyaki) and Kharaj
Mukherjee (inspector at Kalighat Police Station). The other supporting
characters like Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Khan) and Dhritiman Chatterjee (K
Bhaskaran) are also among the most experienced theatre actors in Mumbai.
Kolkata 'captured' like never before:This film
captured the City Of Joy like nobody else. The film effortlessly roamed about
in the dingy lanes and by-lanes of north Kolkata and Kumartoli (where Durga
idols are made) and made every frame look so beautiful! Suddenly Kolkata looked
romantic again! Of course, it had to take a pucca Bengali like Sujoy Ghosh to
make it possible.
